History of Quilt
The Triennial Quilt was made in 1988 from squares given by the Episcopal Church Women of dioceses of the nine provinces, and four ECW organizations. The quilt was first displayed as a backdrop for the plenary meeting room of the 39th Triennial Meeting of the ECW in Detroit, Michigan, July 1-9, 1988.
The quilt was designed and stitched by Nita Shelby (Mrs. Ralph Shelby) of Christ Church, Little Rock, Arkansas. She is also a member of the Arkansas Quilter's Guild and a prize-winning quilter. The quilt measures 13 feet wide by 9 feet long, and is available for display at diocesan meetings throughout the country.
We, the Triennial Meeting Quilt Committee, have felt very honored, and have had wonderful fun, compiling this history, but there is still information that is missing. Please contact Gina Frey (
gfrey@wuchem.wustle.edu) for any corrections or additions.
AcknowledgmentsThe triennial Meeting Quilt Committee wants to thank all of the dioceses and national ECW organizations for sending the information about each of the squares on the quilt. We would like to give a special thanks to the Diocese of New York (Louise Jonsson, secretary) for their wonderful list containing the designers of each square, and for their historical information about the quilt. We would also like to thank Jennifer Peters, Assistant Archivist for the Episcopal Church, for her help in obtaining information about the quilt.
